Sunset Cruises in Malta
There's no better way to end a day in Malta than watching the sun drop behind the horizon from the deck of a boat. Cruise past Valletta's golden limestone walls, through the Grand Harbour, or around Comino as the sky turns orange and pink. Bring something to drink, put your feet up, and let the skipper handle the rest.
Sunset in Malta happens over the western horizon, which means the best viewing is from the water. From a boat, you get an unobstructed line of sight that land-based spots cannot match, plus the bonus of Valletta's limestone fortifications turning deep gold in the last hour of light. Sunset times range from around 17:15 in early May to 20:45 at the summer solstice, with most sunset cruises departing two to three hours before sundown.
The Grand Harbour route is the most popular. You pass Fort St. Elmo at the tip of Valletta, the Three Cities across the water, and the Barrakka Gardens perched above. In the evening, the harbour traffic thins out and the water calms down, making for a smooth ride. Your skipper can cut the engine and drift while you watch the colours change.
The St. Paul's Bay route follows the northern coastline past the statue of St. Paul and the rocky islets, with Comino visible on the horizon. On clear evenings, you can see the outline of Gozo beyond. If you depart from Sliema, the Sliema-to-Valletta coastal route is a shorter option that works well for weeknight outings, taking about two hours total.
Sunset cruises work well for groups of all sizes. Couples often book smaller boats for a private evening on the water, while groups of friends or birthday parties can take a larger vessel and bring food and drinks aboard. The sea is typically at its calmest in the evening, so even guests who are nervous about boats tend to find the ride comfortable. Water temperature stays above 22 degrees through September, so a late swim before sunset is common.
